El Centro de Padres at Salud Y Provecho has been in operation since January of 1999.  El Centro provides information on community resources, assistance with referrals, children's books in English and Spanish, a play room, games and puzzles, handouts and materials on a variety of topics in English and Spanish, health care, nutrition, homework help, parent education, tutoring and computers.  The exciting part of El Centro is the availability of a location where parents can gain valuable information about parenting, child development, and community resources.  This year the parent center participated in the Toys for Tots program which gave more parents exposure to El Centro.

The Parents as Teachers group meeting helps Spanish speaking parents with children from 0 to 5 years.  Parents learn about their children's development and meet with other parents, gain new insights, share their experiences, and discuss parenting topics. The parent group meeting is every 4th Friday of the month in the morning from 10:00am to 11:30am. For more information contact Angelita Martinez at 454-8632.

bullet

The parent project group meeting is a ten-week program for Spanish speaking parents with adolescents that act out.  It is designed to help parents demonstrate their love for their children, teach intervention/prevention strategies, improve school attendance and performance, curb drug and alcohol use, stop violence, and improve the parent/child relationship.

Idaho Parents Unlimited group meetings educate Spanish speaking parents of their rights to services for their children with disabilities.  Presented approximately nine Saturdays a year from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  Call for actual dates.

"Men Who Batter" in Spanish meet at the Hispanic Cultural Center in Caldwell from 7pm to 8:30pm.  You can contact Angie Martinez for any information at 454-8632. The English group meets in Caldwell from 6 pm to 7:30 pm with Tony Esquivel.

A Teen Parenting Group is the most recent addition.  The meetings have been successful with her clients; currently there are ten mothers who are attending.  During these group meetings, the mothers are able to interact with each other and their children, as well as receive mentor advice from various guest speakers.  Educational material is provided for the mothers and mothers-to-be ranging from pre-natal care, early childhood, as well as advice on how to deal with issues that are often times common in their plights as single or young mothers.

0-5 Parents as Teachers program is offered as well.  In this program Salud has been able to incorporate the First Book Program.  On some visits we are able to read and share with the child and their parents a book, then we are able to give the book to the child.  Depending on what type of developmental needs these children have, the parents are given child-developmental information that may help them at a very crucial time in their development.  By doing this we hope we are able to empower and help them at a very crucial time in their development and help the parents create that much needed bond and comfort each parent should have when educating their child.

Angelita is the Parent/Child Advocate for school age children ranging from Kindergarten through Jr. High.  This year we will be focusing largely on the Caldwell Community hopefully creating a strong program that we will then be able to branch out to the surrounding communities.  In this program our goal is to create various opportunities that will assist the children and their parents in the child's educational career ahead of them.  Due to the fact that the majority of these families have encountered some sort of language barrier, we will be offering translations and one-to-one meetings with teachers and families.  We will also offer various group meetings on a need by need basis.  Part of our goal is being able to respond to the child's, parent's and school's specific needs.

Salud also offers the Nurturing Father's Program.  This is a 13-week group-based program for developing attitudes and skills for male nurturance. The group of 8 to 16 fathers meet weekly for 2½ hours.

Program activities address the roots of fathering, fathering sons/fathering daughters, discipline without violence, playing with children, teamwork with spouse/partner and more.  Contact the center to find out when their next group begins.
