Dear Pat...

Say Thank You to a Teacher

I have heard people describe teaching as growing humans. I never thought about that much until I watched the children pass by my car yesterday in the crosswalk at the school near my work place. I have watched these same children parade across the street for the last nine months, but yesterday I realized that they looked different. They were standing taller, looking less timid and walking more confidently across the street. I bet if I asked, they would tell me how much they have learned and grown since school started in August. They have grown in ways that I can see and ways that I cant, but they have grown in part from the lessons that their teachers have taught them.

How many professionals would have something as concrete as that to show for nine months of work? Maybe a builder, manufacturer, or farmer but are their homes, products, or produce as important or going to have as much impact on the world as our children? Our children who are going to be future doctors, teachers, preachers, lawyers, business people or even the President? I don’t think so.

Teachers do an amazing and important job; shaping the very future of our world! How can we not give these people all of our love and respect, not to mention our money, for the job they do and the responsibility they accept each year? They help grow new humans every year and seem never to forget the faces of those children as they become full grown adults! I have a sister who is a teacher and no matter where we go, we always run into some young person who will come up to her and say, Mrs. Smith, remember me, I was the girl in your class who swallowed a nickel or the boy who brought his pet snake to English class.

Astonishingly, my sister who can’t remember where she put her keys five minutes ago will say, Sure I remember you, and your younger sister or brother who came along a couple of years after you! Some of the teachers I had in school helped shape who I am today and I can trace some of my knowledge and abilities directly back to those important people. Some of them I have thanked for their contribution to my life. Many are gone so I cant. I regret those missed thank yous, and so will say this year to all of those teachers who are working so hard on their new crop of humans - Thank You for a job well done!
